An effective job search is all about differentiating yourself from your competition — to become known as an expert in your field. Ways to achieve this online include establishing a blog that showcases your industry knowledge, answering questions on LinkedIn, and posting comments on well-read blogs within your niche. For some more inspiration and ideas on how to get started, read what Jessica Swanson, “The Shoestring Marketer,” shares about declaring yourself an expert:

One of the threads that ties successful individuals together is the fact that they are considered experts in their particular field. They exude leadership qualities that naturally attract a base of loyal followers.
Unfortunately, this concept escapes many individuals who are desperate for success. They feel that they either don’t have an area of expertise, they don’t have the right qualifications, or they don’t possess a formal “degree” in order to lead a group of people.
The interesting fact is that all experts, at one time or another, make a conscious decision that they are going to become an expert in their particular industry. So, the day arrives that they simply “declare themselves an expert!”
Muhammad Ali, declared himself “The Greatest,” over and over again until he was perceived as the greatest fighter in the world. He didn’t wait until he had won a certain amount of fights, instead he proclaimed that he was “The Greatest” and went on to prove this fact.
A few years ago, I was a writer trying to market my book over the internet. I had very little money and needed to find ways to tap into no-cost marketing strategies. I soon discovered that there were very few products, resources or programs to teach me how to accomplish this. So, I took it upon myself to learn how to market my book for no-cost.
I researched as much as I could from a variety of sources about free marketing. After learning about free marketing and applying free marketing strategies with success, I decided to declare myself a free marketing expert and even named myself and my brand, “The Shoestring Marketer.”
At one time or another, you will need to decide that it’s time to declare yourself an expert. You can’t sit around and wait for someone else to do it for you. If you do, you will be sitting around for a very long time!
You need to discover an area within your industry that is in need of expert advice. Then, you should take it upon yourself to learn as much as you can about this area.
Earl Nightingale, one of the great success educators of our time, once said that anyone can become an expert if they dedicate themselves to studying about their particular field for just an hour each day for one year.
There are so many ways to accomplish this, however, one of my favorites is to log into www.EzineArticles.com and search for the topic that you need to research.
Then start reading! That’s right, start reading as much as you can about your particular topic. If you take the time to read just 10-15 articles on your particular topic, you will begin to soak up valuable information that will quickly lead to a knowledge base that many others don’t possess. It won’t be long before you can begin helping others in your industry and dispense valuable advice.
You can turn your knowledge into a special report, short e-book or 10-day e-course. The main objective is to offer others a sample of your knowledge base.
Once you declare yourself an expert, package your knowledge and offer it to others, you will be surprised how quickly you will develop a group of followers that are eager to learn from you!
