Many job seekers are elated to get a job interview, only to realize they have no idea how they are “supposed” to answer some of the questions being asked. Here are my suggestions on how to respond to two of the most common questions job seekers worry about:
“Why do you want to work here?”
Job candidates should anticipate this question being asked and research the company. Read up on the company’s recent advancements and successes and identify what they are known for in their industry and what they are good at doing. Are they cutting edge? Are they leading the way in a particular area in the field? Are they expanding and moving into new markets or new products? Identify something that appeals to you and relate that to why you want to be a part of their organization.
“What is your greatest weakness?”
Listen, the interviewer knows no one is perfect. He/she is looking to see if you have a healthy attitude towards self-improvement. Give an answer that shares a weakness of yours in the past that you have since identified and improved upon. This shows a willingness to take constructive feedback and work to improve your weaknesses. Just be strategic when naming a weakness: don’t mention one that is related to the job function.
A little bit of forethought can ensure that you won’t be stumped when asked these questions at your next interview!
